After a delightful four-day stay in Lake Garda in 2023, we set our sights on the stunning region of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Here's a detailed account of our adventure.

Travel and Accommodation

To simplify our trip, we booked through Wonderling Travel, a local travel agent that took care of all the details. We stayed south of Naples in the Sorrento area at the Majestic Hotel in Sant'Agnello.

This fabulous hotel boasts a rooftop Martini Bar, which is a perfect spot for sunset, especially with a Dirty Martini in hand.

Getting Around

The hotel is a 20-25 minute walk into Sorrento. We only walked once due to high traffic and narrow pavements, opting for taxis but mostly the train which is just a four minute ride.

Nearby, is a marina with a private sundeck and small beach. La Marinella in Sant'Agnello is perfect for a relaxing day by the ocean with sun-lounger waiter service, toilets, and changing rooms.

Day Trip to Capri

Our first full day was spent in Capri. Be prepared for heavy crowds and long queues for the ferry, tram, buses, taxis and chairlifts to Anacapri. Despite the crowds, the views from the highest point are spectacular. The island is divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri. The tram/funicular from Marina Grande takes you to Capri's historic center, filled with bars, restaurants, and designer shops. To reach Anacapri, buses run from both Marina Grande and Capri town. We enjoyed a quiet moment at in the Dior Resort pop-up store at Il Ricco, watching super-yachts and sipping drinks. The return trip involved more queues, so patience and hydration are key.

Tips for Visiting Capri

Consider staying overnight in Capri to enjoy the island when it's less crowded. While I enjoyed ticking Capri off my bucket list, my husband found the crowds challenging.

A Tour of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello

A highlight of our trip was a round tour of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Starting at 8:30 am with a private driver, we enjoyed a taster visit at each location. These trips are offered in abundance locally and we used Vale Tours and tickets who were excellent.

We joined a boat trip from Amalfi which showcased stunning landscapes and beautiful seaside properties. In Ravello, we lunched and visited the Belmond Hotel for drinks. Time constraints prevented us from visiting Villa Rufolo Gardens, but the panoramic views and sculptured gardens are highly recommended.

Exploring Sorrento

In Sorrento, we used the train from Sant'Agnello and enjoyed leisurely strolls through the narrow streets lined with shops, bars, and restaurants. The central square buzzes with activity, and the shaded streets offer a respite from the sun. We indulged in drinks at L’Anton which has beautiful interior design shop in the basement. We enjoyed the lunch experience at the historic restaurant O'Parrucchiano La Favorita where cannelloni was invented.

The food at Alfred in Sant'Agnello and Donna Sophia in Sorrento was delightful, and Tony’s bar in Sant’Agnello was a great spot for drinks, especially during the Euros Football Championship.

We had another pleasant meal at Foreigner's Club. This is a great place for catching sunsets too and we enjoyed their capri salad and pizza.

Weddings are common place and we saw three during our stay which was very romantic.

Dining Tips

We found some restaurants in Sorrento to have a minimum spend policy and most used QR code menus. We used cash for tipping, and worth noting that hotel tax added 30% to our drinks bill.

Recommendations for Future Visitors

For those wanting to visit Amalfi but deterred by high prices, consider staying in Sant'Agnello on the outskirts of Sorrento or Praiano. These areas offer stunning views, easy access to other towns, and a more authentic feel. Accommodation serves as a base for numerous day trips. Dress code amongst tourists in restaurants varied, with a mix of relaxed and smart attire. However the Italians always wear long trousers to dine and you’ll never catch them in flip flops.

Final Thoughts

The Amalfi Coast's popularity has surged, particularly among Americans, possibly due to Ripley on Netflix and the film "Equalizer." To avoid large crowds, it may be worth checking American and European holiday schedules before booking. And avoiding June-September months. Sorrento is filled with iconic sights like Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Capri. The colourful towns, marinas, and piazzas offer perfect spots for a glass of limoncello and leisurely evening passeggiata, a traditional stroll for socialising.

In summary, we enjoyed a memorable trip filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and delightful experiences. The Amalfi Coast is a must-visit destination that offers something for everyone.

Iceland—a land of stunning landscapes, geothermal wonders, and vibrant culture—was the dream destination for a recent hen night trip with my lovely girlfriends. Here's a glimpse into our four-day adventure filled with unforgettable experiences in Reykjavík and beyond.

Day 1: Reykjavík Welcome

Our journey began with a champagne breakfast at Manchester Airport's 1902 lounge, setting the tone for a fabulous getaway. Upon arrival in Iceland, we checked into Hotel Frón on Reykjavík's liveliest Laugavegur street. The hotel's central location was perfect for exploring the city's bars, restaurants, and shops.

Eager to soak up the Icelandic charm, we strolled to the Sun Voyager sculpture by the Atlantic Ocean—a symbol of hope and freedom. Afterward, we savored Icelandic delicacies like lamb soup (Kjötsúpa) at a local restaurant, accompanied by ice-cold Boli, the local beer.

The highlight of our day was the Sky Lagoon experience—a geothermal spa boasting stunning views of the Atlantic. As part of "The Ritual" package, we indulged in lagoon relaxation, saunas, and more, all set against a breathtaking Icelandic backdrop.

Day 2: Reykjavík Exploration

Our second day was dedicated to exploring Reykjavík's unique attractions. We kicked off with coffee and cinnamon rolls at the famous Braud & co before marvelling at the architecture of Háteignkirkja church and Harpa Concert Hall. Here, we ventured into virtual reality, experiencing Iceland's landscapes from an exhilarating perspective. Video footage is taken from the air with a drone and a 360° camera. The experience takes about 13 minutes.

Visitors can experience Iceland from above in a custom-made chair with virtual reality glasses. This was breathtaking as it featured volcanic eruption, waterfalls, glaziers, geysers and beautiful beaches.

For a taste of Icelandic cuisine, we visited Hlemmur Mathöll—a food hall housed in a converted bus station—offering a diverse range of European and Scandinavian fusion dishes.

As evening descended, we embarked on a lively pub crawl, sampling cocktails and local fare at The Bastard—a memorable night that culminated in brilliant live music at a bookstore-turned-bar called The Bookstore Band.

Day 3: Golden Circle Adventure

Embracing Iceland's natural wonders, we rented a car to explore the Golden Circle. Despite snowy conditions, we marveled at Gulfoss—the majestic waterfall—and witnessed erupting geysers at Selfoss.

Our lunch at Friðheimar, a tomato farm serving tomato-based delights in a greenhouse, was a true highlight. We started with a bloody mary followed by tomato soup which was served with delicious homemade bread and butter.

There was a basil plant on each table with scissors attached so you could easily add some fresh basil to your food. A really nice touch.

Post-lunch, we indulged in the Secret Lagoon—a serene geothermal pool, renowned for its skin-soothing properties.

Back in Reykjavík, we savored our final supper at Brút, a Michelin Guide-listed seafood restaurant, relishing local delicacies like rock crab and caviar.

Closing Thoughts

Iceland left an indelible mark on our hearts. While our journey was packed with adventures, there's still so much left to explore - Diamond Beach, Vík, an Ice bar, and the famed Blue Lagoon await our return.

For those planning a trip to Iceland, I recommend embracing the country's unique offerings and indulging in its culinary delights. While Iceland can be pricey, happy hours and local tips make it accessible and unforgettable.

Until next time, Iceland—takk fyrir (thank you) for an incredible hen night experience!

We had a wholesome couple of nights away at Pen y Gamfa, a quaint grade 2 listed cottage on the isle of Anglesey.

This Welsh hideaway is over 200 years old and was ideal for 2 adults and 2 dogs.

Amenities include:

- Enclosed tropical garden oasis with a sun trap at the back.

- Heated floor and Aga wood burner.

- Double bed, and crog loft with queen bed.

- Well equipped kitchen & bathroom/shower.

A real hidden gem, Pen y Gamfa is tucked away in the village of Dwyran. The property is advertised on Airbnb but we booked direct on Instagram.

The charming cottage comprises a lounge, bedroom area and crog loft. The bed is part screened from the lounge and windows have shutters making the cottage lovely and cosy during the winter nights. The eco extension with living roof is a later addition.

We arrived on Friday after picking up supplies from Waitrose, Menai Bridge. We wanted to make the most of the cottage and had decided it was going to be a cosy night in.

Having checked the forecast, we set off for an early walk on Saturday. The cottage is close to the beautiful coastline including magical Ynys Llanddwyn, an island which is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty, and Newborough forest.

However we wanted to end the walk in a dog friendly pub so opted for Rhosneigr. We parked just outside at Porth Tyn Tywyn where the fab Sauna Wales is situated and watched people run from the freezing sea into a hot sauna! We walked along the dunes and beaches with both dogs enjoying the freedom and fresh air.

First stop in Rhosneigr was a bit of retail therapy at Janet Bell Home-store. Janet is a local artist and has two shops on the island selling her work and all things Scandinavian. I challenge anyone to leave Janet Bell’s without a purchase!

Next stop was Sandy Mount House, a contemporary beach house restaurant & bar. Think cosy corners, log fires & stylish interiors and dog treats! We had a pint and some lunch then headed back to the car getting caught in the forecasted downpour!

Luckily the cottage is only 20 mins away so we got back, stripped off, put our pj’s on and lit a fire. There is something so relaxing and mesmerising about a wood burner, the dogs lay in their beds in front of a roaring fire and it really was bliss.

Anglesey is our favourite island with wonderful beaches and pretty villages all around the coastline. This cottage can be enjoyed in the winter months with its cosy vibe as well as in the summer months with its tropical garden and sun trap.

The owners Ian & Gemma obviously have a love of gardens as they have a second property in Glan Conwy and the garden there looks beautiful too. Both gardens at the properties are a slice of paradise, picture lush greenery, vibrant flowers in every color imaginable. It's like stepping into a tropical oasis. Tyddyn y Felin is five minutes away from Bodnant Gardens if you are into Garden Centres.

So on Sunday morning we headed to Malltraeth and walked along the Cefni estuary into Newborough forest. Having studied the information booklet at the cottage, we headed for Llys Llywelyn in Aberffraw for a highly recommended club sandwich before heading home.

Other great businesses to visit on the island include;

Chateau Rhiannfa, Menai Bridge - for Champagne afternoon tea;

Cafe Notos, Rhosneigr - for Bakery/Deli/Cakes & speciality coffee;

The Oyster catcher, Rhosneigr - for food, cocktails and events;

The Gazelle Hotel, Menai Bridge - for lovely bar food, entertainment and views across the strait;

Space like this, Menai Bridge - for all things interior and in house design service;

Halen Môn, Brynsiencyn - for Pure Sea Salt and locally sourced products;

Green Olive, Menai Bridge - Vegan café;

Hawthorne yard, Menai Bridge - for fresh flowers and pre-loved furniture items & antiques;

Môn Hyfryd - for Beautifully converted maisonette self catering cottages;

Dylan's, Menai Bridge - for modern waterfront dining with pizza and seafood specials & Dylan's General Stores selling fresh local

Produce and baked goods.

Let me know if you ever visit and hope you enjoy Anglesey as much as we did!
