I recently visited London with two girlfriends to experience the wonders that Christmas has to offer in the capital.

It was a short break over two and a half days and this is what we got up to!

We arrived by train on a Monday in December and checked into our airbnb in the heart of Covent Garden. Check it out here:

I cannot stress how handy it is to have a centrally located property especially as we were on a short stay.

So on Day one we dropped off our luggage off at the property and headed for the Cheese Bar which is the only fully cheese-focused restaurant in London! Their flagship restaurant is in the heart of Camden Market, they also have a conveyor belt of cheese dreams in Covent Garden, but we visited their latest opening – The Cheese Barge in Paddington Central and yes, it was on a boat! What a wonderful culinary experience this was with a menu dedicated to championing British cheese.

All dishes are freshly made with locally sourced ingredients, and each contains at least one of their favourite British cheeses.

We washed it all down with a lovely bottle of red wine.

We then returned to our accommodation to unpack, change to our sparkly numbers and headed out on foot to Archer street, which was about a 10 minute walk away.

Archer Street is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Soho.

It is the ultimate destination for those seeking an unforgettable experience!

We were serenaded by an extraordinary cast of talented performers which comprised of singers and actors who have graced the stages of the West End.

We booked online beforehand and the theme was Christmas Carol night.

As well as being captivated by the singers, we were given complimentary mulled wine, a mince pie and a Christmas Carol hymn sheet to join in with the entertainers during the evening.

This was a 2 hour experience and it was free to book and so much fun.

Must also mention that the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.

We were slightly merry on departure and jumped on the back of a bike taxi that was kitted out in tinsel and blaring Christmas songs! We howled laughing all the way until got dropped off in Leicester square which was just around the bloody corner!

But it’s one of those things that has to be done on a night out in the capital right?

We then headed for an Italian restaurant and sat in the outdoor seating area with warm patio heaters enjoying a pizza and pint to finish off our tipsy night out.

On Day two we had a chilled morning before catching a train two stops away to Borough Market.

This is a Huge market under the railway lines, for British-reared meat and artisanal baked and speciality goods.

There were lots of coffee pop ups, oyster bars & seafood, and a huge paella being cooked throughout the day! This is without a doubt one of the most popular dishes at Borough Market, judging by the large queue.

After grabbing a coffee and some goodies at the Market we headed for the Shard as we’d booked afternoon tea.

This was on the 68th floor, 800ft up the high skyscraper in the Sleek, stylish Asian-inspired ting restaurant.

We marvelled over panoramic city views where you can see landmarks including the Tower of London and HMS Belfast as you gaze across the River Thames.

A whimsical Over The Rainbow Afternoon Tea is served at the wisteria clad TĪNG Lounge, featuring a showstopping miniature milk Shard building for two to share, filled with indulgent hazelnut praline, lemon jelly and Valrhona Dulcey mousse.

A selection of finger sandwiches were served including coronation chicken, smoked salmon and cucumber, classic Reuben and truffle egg and cress. Savouries such as hibiscus flower and a Rata burger with ratatouille and green pesto followed.

This was a one off experience for the bucket list, and one of my top choices for a London experience!

An unexpected piece of luxury at the shard was experiencing the Japanese Toto washlet toilets.

This is basically the 'Mercedes Benz’ of toilets!

Not only was the seat heated but the Washlet offers the functionality of a bidet within a toilet allowing you to clean yourself with the assistance of warm water without moving to a different fixture! Another one off the bucket list - how sad am I!

After an unforgettable afternoon tea followed by an unexpected bum wash we decided to get some steps in and enjoy the festive Christmas lights.

So we had another quick outfit change to tracksuit and trainers to start our projected hour long walk starting at Tottenham court road. You’ll find a 360-degree immersive wonderland, with 23,000 square feet of floor-to-ceiling digital art. Removing ourselves from the hustle and bustle of central London was just the activity we were looking for, and it’s free!

We then headed to Bond Street station to start our walk tour via the light filled South Molton Street, then Brook Street through to the fabulous Old Bond Street and of course the iconic Bond Street Christmas displays at Chanel, Dior, Boodles and more.

Next down to New Bond Street, and then through the festive filled Burlington Arcade and catch the annual Fortnum And Mason Advent calendar.

Fortnum & Mason claims to have invented the Scotch egg in 1738! For this reason, we had to visit and to witness the dancing christmas puddings suspended from the ceiling. It’s a fascinating central store display watching christmas puddings dance in an orchestrated performance that is three storeys high! I highly recommend stepping up a few stairs to take in the full scale of this in operation!

We then followed secret passageways to the angels of Regents streets and caught the 139 bus to see the lights from the top deck for £1.75!

Christmas lights walk can be purchased here by London blogger Candace Salters: Christmas Walk #1 – CandaceAbroad

We hopped off the bus in Covent Garden and upon arrival we headed straight to the Royal Opera House for another hidden gem!

Located at the top of the Royal Opera House, you can sit with a drink or some food in the Piazza Terrace Bar.

They do cocktails and mocktails at the bar but you can also buy food and hot drinks in the cafe downstairs and bring it up with you. It’s walk in only, it’s super chilled and it’s ideal for a quick respite in-between sight seeing. You can choose to be properly outside (it’s cold!) or inside where it’s covered.

On our last evening we visited the iconic Bob Bob Ricard Soho, we had a late sitting as we’d indulged in afternoon tea on the same day!

The restaurant is located just off Regent Street, it serves classic British & French cuisine and we enjoyed Jersey rock oysters, steak tartare & Salmon En croute with champagne sauce. Their signature dishes are highlighted on the menu and the best bit was that every table is equipped with a “Press for Champagne” button! The restaurant is famous for pouring more

champagne than any other restaurant in Britain- and we certainly put it to the test!

On our last day we decided to visit Liberty and Carnaby street.

We dropped off our suitcases at the property agents office which was 2 minutes away from the airbnb. This was arranged prior via an email agreement. Then we grabbed a quick brunch on the go in Pret including some much needed ginger shots for an energy boost!

Liberty is just an iconic department store within a Tudor building filled with high-end fashion and luxury homeware, and its own fabric line. Prices are not for the faint hearted but the products are very high end quality and we just visited to browse.

Staff are super friendly and approachable and the ladies loo had the best wallaper- very posh!

Next stop was Sophie Tea art in Carnaby which is well worth a visit. This is not your typical gallery, it’s a place to interact with the art in an immersive experience!

It’s been specially created to make you feel like you’re right at home in the centre of crazy London! With a surprise room behind the Smeg fridge. Set across 3 levels, with an elevated aesthetic, the gallery pays tribute to Sophie Tea Art’s history.

I particularly loved seeing her nudes journey and collabs in particular with the late Nicky Newman who became a digital creator after being diagnosed with stage 4 incurable breast cancer. She coined the phrase #gograblife and raised much awareness for secondary cancer. She dealt with her cruel disease with a smile on her face and even became an ambassador for Tanya Whitebits which I am forever grateful to her for.

After wonderful couple of hours in Carnaby street we visited the instagramable EL&N cafe for espresso and cake, picked up our suitcases and headed for Euston station.

This London trip was an unforgettable experience and I can’t underestimate the importance of planning beforehand.

I can’t take credit for some of the bookings as my wonderful friends put the work in and I feel like I just turned up!

It was months of planning and sharing ideas and itineraries. We did a mix of free and paid experiences, however we also pushed the boat out when it came to food and drink!

London has a population of around 8.8 million, it stands on the River Thames and is one of the oldest cities in the world.

There really is something for everyone there, and our short break was just the tip of the iceberg which I strongly suspect will become an annual event!

Watch this space!

When the temperatures hit minus 5 back home, we knew we’d made the right decision to head to for some pre-xmas winter Sun! We flew with Jet2 and booked via our usual travel agents at Wonderling Travel.

We like exploring new places, but this hotel is one that doesn’t disappoint since we first visited 22 years ago! And this was now our 3rd visit!

We find that 4 hours away, Tenerife provides all year-round sunshine, and offers enough to cater for all the family.

So we landed beginning of December and took the short 15 minute airport shuttle transfer to Dreams Jardin Tropical Hotel, in Costa Adeje.

This is a luxury 4* hotel and spa located in Adeje’s Coast, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and La Gomera. The hotel stands out aesthetically on the coast due to its unique Arabic-style and beautiful white moorish architecture, it is designed by the renowned architect Melin Villaroel.

The corridors are lit up with beautiful lanterns and in the evenings, candles light up indoor and outdoor areas, creating a magical atmosphere.

The hotel boasts no less than 6 restaurants serving international cuisine.

We stayed bed and breakfast as we like to explore in the evenings but could have happily dined at the numerous hotel restaurants for the duration of our stay.

Breakfast buffet is very rich. You can find various types of cheese, jams, vegetables, desserts and hot food or even have a glass of fizz! Which, let’s face it, are you even on holiday if you don’t start the day with Prosecco?

The hotel is conveniently located between Costa Adeje and Las Americas so its location makes it a prime location for young and older guests.

Other amenities at the hotel include 24-hour reception, Kids Explorers’ Club and Core Zone (note: there weren’t many children here during our stay), an open-air gym with daily classes which are listed on the hotel app.

Also listed are evening entertainment, spa offers, bike hire and more.

I attended yoga or spinning every morning at 8am followed by breakfast. I loved this routine as I love being outside in the morning and the gym has views over the ocean towards La Gomera.

We also did aqua aerobics at 12 a couple of days so there is a full activity list available at the hotel. If you like a workout, it’s worth bringing your gym gear.

We were joined by our 20-year-old twin daughters so we had a broad wish-list to suit all our needs. We booked a standard twin and double room which were both elegantly decorated.

Both rooms were on the same floor and had a balcony with outdoor furniture, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, minibar, and safe. The private bathroom included a large power shower and hairdryer. Free WiFi is available throughout.

The nearest beach is 400m from Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort Spa. Siam Park is a 3-minute drive from the property. We had planned to visit, however each day of our holiday was overcast and cloudy at some point and we felt we wanted it to be blue skies in order for us to be in the water all day. Having said that we enjoyed temperatures in the 70s daily.

Dreams Jardín Tropical Resort & Spa offers guests an elevated level of service, premium room locations and the option of VIP perks through the Preferred Club. Preferred Club Lounge offers a selection of snacks and drinks during the day. They also have an additional private area for guests among other special advantages.

We didn’t use the preferred club as we were more than happy with the overall hotel facilities.

One of our favourite experiences was the sunset bar in the hotel. We would go up to watch amazing sunsets, have a cocktail or glass of wine and play cards whilst listening to live music most nights.

From there we would venture out to look for something to eat.

A top tip to find places to eat or things to do is to use TikTok as a search engine, this was brought to my attention by my 20-year-olds!

This is how we found the fabulous Bianco Italiano Ristorante & Cocktails dinner and entertainment experience. Booking is essential for this 3-hour dinner experience. Described as the most anticipated event of the week – happening every Saturday. We had a fantastic time from start to finish. Entrance includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival. Entertainment included a live DJ set, opera singer, dancers, rock music and amazing food. These sensational components made Bianco’s Dinner Show Party nights one of our favourite nights out in Tenerife.

On our last visit to the island, we hired a boat, this included drinks, snacks, whale watching and swimming. It was a 3-hour experience and a must on a sunny day.

There are many boat trips situated in Puerto Colon which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. There is a wide variety of trips to choose, from tranquil sunset cruises to exciting whale and dolphin watching adventures, booze cruise and more.

Other things I enjoyed was a pedicure and foot massage as there are numerous parlours scattered on the coast and we did quite a bit of walking after breakfast, so this was a welcome treat.

We visited Safari & Oasis shopping park which has numerous shops, bars & restaurants. Located in Safari Shopping Centre is the wonderful Light & Music Fountain which was lovely, and the best view is from Harry’s Bar. Shops here include Zara, Stradivarius, designer outlets. As mentioned, we can recommend Bianco and Empire Steakhouse which are also situated here.

Regular markets are also held every Thursday and Saturday morning opposite the Centro Commercial El Duque in the Torviscas district of the resort. We visited on Tuesday then had a relaxing drink at the shopping centre. It’s a nice size and not too big.

My holiday read was Billy Connolly’s autobiography, Windswept and Interesting, which was a humorous honest account of his life and sometimes dark! Have since found myself going through YouTube clips of his comedy shows, a time where comedy wasn’t censored or cancelled. Let’s just say it was pre-PC material!

We loved having family time in Tenerife and Jardin Tropical is the perfect place to chill out and recharge your batteries.

We had the best two day stay at INNSiDE Liverpool.

In front of the iconic Royal Liver building
In front of the iconic Royal Liver building

It’s been on my wish list for a while as it combines 4* accommodation, a Gino D'Acampo restaurant on the ground floor (which is where breakfast is served) and a 360 Sky Bar and rooftop terrace on the top floor with unrivalled views of Liverpool and the River Mersey.

The hotel is located in the old Post & Echo Building and is within close proximity to attractions such as the Liver Building and the iconic Albert Docks.

We checked in at 3pm on Friday and parked at the nearby NCP carpark (Liverpool Capital). I booked a standard room direct with Melia.com and signed up as a member which is free. MeliáRewards is their loyalty programme and offers members a range of exclusive benefits and special offers.

You can check in online beforehand, but my sneaky plan was to check in at 3pm in person, in the hope that they had empty rooms for a potential upgrade! I presume that once you check in online that your room is allocated automatically on arrival, but holding out may get you that special offer, and being a member will certainly play in your favour, and guess what? It worked 🙌🏽

Upon check in I mentioned that I was a member and that I also have a personal blog and was offered an upgrade to their studio accommodation which really did put the icing on the cake for us.

We checked into the stunning studio on the 16th floor with floor-to-ceiling windows and were blown away with stunning views of the city and the River Mersey. The studio is a spacious and comfortable retreat, it includes a king-size bed, a sofa-bed, a complimentary minibar, a coffee maker and capsules and a surprising detail for me was a yoga mat! I mean, where better to start the day than with a workout with spectacular city views as a backdrop?

As INNSIDE guests we were given a card to enjoy 10% off when you dine at Gino D’Acampo restaurant or 360 Sky Bar, so we took advantage of this great offer. It has a one-time use limit and we used it against the evening meal for 6 of us when we were joined by the girls and their partners on Friday.

After unpacking we decided to head down to Gino D’Acampo’s for a drink and nibbles. This space is the hub of the hotel on the ground floor, providing breakfast, lunch, afternoon teas, drinks and evening dining. It’s a bustling space for residents and non-residents with relaxed vibe which is ideal for people watching. There is a big neon sign on the back wall saying “my life, friends and family” signed by Gino and the restaurant space encapsulates exactly that.

After welcome drinks we headed to our studio room for a quick shower and change and met the rest of the brood for pre-dinner drinks at 360 Sky Bar (which is situated on the top floor of the hotel and is open to residents and non-residents). Booking is essential and it boasts unrivalled views over the City of Liverpool. It plays host to the most spectacular sunsets so you can watch the world go by whilst dining from their cicchetti menu or enjoy their extensive cocktail menu. We did both!

We had a great time, whilst listening to the resident DJ.

We then we headed for Gino’s restaurant back on the ground floor, a beautiful modern open plan space with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Old Hall Street.

After dinner we walked over to the Cavern Quarter, which is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Known as the birthplace of the Beatles the Cavern Quarter is made up of the iconic Mathew Street and surrounding streets.

Cavern Quarter is a lively part of the city characterised by its popular pubs, night spots and live music. We ended our evening here and loved it as it has a mixed age group from young to old.

Saturday was a chilled start with breakfast at Gino D’Acampo’s.

Then I hit the brow bar at Superdrug in Liverpool One, this was a good 10-minute walk from the hotel.

The beauty of this service is that no booking is required and you can walk in as experienced therapists offer a range of treatments for all your brow needs.

Next, I headed for a bit of retail therapy at Zara 😊

Located opposite Zara is John Lewis which is where I stumbled across their Clarins Beauty Bar!

It can be found on the First floor and offers a range of treatments from Facials to massages and Men’s treatments.

Had I known I would have booked a treatment here, but they were full, however it’s noted for my next visit! They also have a Spa on the 3rd floor which sounded divine.

Luckily, I had already booked a complimentary hand and arm massage at Jo Malone in Flannels, and it did not disappoint. A 15-minute experience can be booked online here: https://www.jomalone.co.uk/book-appointment

Includes a Scent Pairing consultation and a glass of Prosecco with no obligation to purchase. Needless to say, I bought some treats!

We returned to the hotel late afternoon to enjoy wine and a cheeseboard at Gino D'Acampo. We then retired to our plush studio to watch the boats on the Mersey, followed by a cheeky siesta! It was so relaxing!

Saturday evening was strictly couple time only and we headed for the highly recommended Cowshed. There are many lovely restaurants in Liverpool but this is definitely one we will visit again.

The service, ambience and food were top notch. We sat in a cosy booth, and I would recommend requesting this seating arrangement on booking if available.

We didn’t have a late night and headed back to our fabulous studio to enjoy the panoramic night-time view of the City.

Sunday started with another lovely breakfast at Gino D'Acampo and since check-out is one of the latest in the city hotels at 12:00, we made the most and headed for a walk to the docks.

Did I mention that INNSIDE also has a 24-hour gym? We did not use this facility, but it’s noted.

Finally, from previous visits I’d recommend the following foodie experiences:

Mowgli - Indian street food

Leaf bold street - lunchtime hidden gem

Panam - casual dining and bottomless brunch based in the Albert docks

San Carlo - Italian cuisine- never disappoints

Duke Street Market - food and drink market with 6 different kitchens to choose from

The Cosy Club - centrally located brunch/lunch/afternoon cocktail

Baltic Market - Dog friendly & something for everyone

Panoramic - high class dinning with strict dress code and the best afternoon tea at the 34th floor of Liverpool's West Tower, reaching 100m above sea level. Panoramic offers 360° views of the city.

Things to do:

Bongo’s Bingo - crazy night, needs booking in advance

Junkyard Golf / Gold Fang - not weather dependant and usually over 18s
